Makhadzi accused of mocking deaf people

Makhadzi’s playful demonstration of the sign language lands her in trouble

Makhadzi faces backlash for allegedly mocking the sign language.

The South African sign language SASL shared a video of the award-winning singer doing some hand gestures; she was accused of mocking the deaf.

The community encouraged people to promote positivity and inclusivity.

“Using sign language to mock deaf people is UNACCEPTABLE, @makhadzisa It’s time to learn about Deaf culture and promote positivity and inclusivity. Let’s unite, not divide,” reads the caption.

The post garnered mixed reactions. While some defended the singer, others dragged her.

“She must go to jail,” a comment reads.

“Yeah @makhadzisa must be sued. Please report to the PanSALB and send form complaint olga@pansalb.org an email,” a follower wrote.

“A great majority of South Africa can’t speak Sign language and that’s not because of ignorance but because of lack of exposure, this video is playful and should be taken as such, like all of us @makhadzisa would love to learn proper sign if given a chance, we need to stop taking everything so seriously,” another wrote.
