Zakes Bantwini apologizes to DJ Cleo after criticism over SAMA 30 performance

DJ Cleo frowns at Zakes Bantwini for calling him out on social media over his SAMA 30 performance

Zakes Bantwini extended an apology to DJ Cleo after expressing disappointment with Cleo’s setlist at the South African Music Awards 2024.

Bantwini initially celebrated the 30th annual SAMAs and praised Cleo’s mix, though he voiced concerns about the exclusion of Durban-Kwaito songs.

“I really enjoyed the 30-year Kwaito tribute by DJ Cleo, but I was disappointed that the Durban-Kwaito music era was not adequately represented in the mix,” the Grammy award-winning DJ wrote.

Taking to Twitter, DJ Cleo responded, “My brother, I love you and your moves & have always rooted for you. I’ve never tweeted or said anything negative about you. You have my number & you know SAMAs are very political and not my show or platform. Let’s lead the young ones by example & avoid social media rants.”

Acknowledging Cleo’s response, Zakes apologized, saying, “I apologize if my previous tweet offended you. My comment was driven by my passion for music. You are right; I should have reached out directly. Please accept my sincere apology.”

The exchange sparked a broader discussion among fans, with many weighing in on the interaction.
